Flexibility That Fits Your Life: Why Amma Mountain Academy Embraces an “Open Door” Policy

An “Open Door” policy has been a game changer for microschools.

In the world of traditional education, the bell is the dictator of daily life. If you’re five minutes late, you’re "tardy." If you have a family opportunity on a Tuesday, you’re "truant." For decades, we’ve forced unique, multi-faceted children into a rigid 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM box, regardless of how they actually learn or what their families actually need.

At Amma Mountain Academy, we’re breaking the box. We operate on an Open Door Policy, and it’s one of the things that makes our microschool model so transformative.

What Exactly is an “Open Door” Policy?

Simply put: We provide the space and the support; you provide the schedule.

Unless otherwise stated, our learning centers are open Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. But unlike a traditional school, we don’t demand that every student be in their seat for that entire window every single day.

  • Frequency: Come as often or as little as your enrolled plan allows.

  • Duration: Stay for the whole day or just a few hours.

  • The Goal: We are here to offer support when and if your student needs it.

Microschool vs. Traditional School: The Freedom to Learn

Why does this matter? Because the traditional "one-size-fits-all" schedule often works against a child’s natural rhythm. Here is how our Open Door policy compares to the old way of doing things:

Feature Traditional School Amma Mountain
Academy
Attendance Mandatory, Rigid Hours Flexible, Based on your
family's needs
Learning Space Moves with the group, Keep up
or get left behind
Student led; Come in for support
when you hit a wall
Family Life Family must revolve around
the school calendar
School revolves around the
family's lifestyle
Environment Large, often crowded
classrooms
Small, intimate learning pods

The Power of the "Pod"

You might wonder, "How can a school stay organized if kids are coming and going?" The secret is our Small Group Pods.

Each pod is assigned a dedicated Amma Mountain Academy Coach. Because our groups are small, our coaches can provide close, individual academic support and supervision that is physically impossible in a classroom of thirty students.

When your student walks through our doors, their coach knows exactly where they are in their curriculum. Whether they stay for two hours of intensive math help or six hours of collaborative project work, they are getting high-level, personalized attention.

A Partnership of Trust

This level of flexibility requires a strong partnership between the academy and our families. While we provide the academic sanctuary and expert coaching, we lean on our parents to handle the logistics. There are a number of Tennessee laws that homeschooling families must follow. Is the Open Door Right for You?

We believe that education should be a resource, not a cage. By offering an Open Door policy, we empower students to take ownership of their time and give families the freedom to live their lives without the stress of a rigid school bell.

Your child is unique. Their schedule should be, too.
